Playful Sculptures

Museu da Casa Brasileira, São Paulo, October 2022 to April 2023
Curator

Brazilian towns have virtually no public spaces for conviviality and enjoyment of art, and those few available usually cater to adults. Sara Rosenberg has been reflecting for a long time about the way in which the artistic form is capable of awakening children’s creative and imaginative abilities and about a decade ago started to create interactive sculptures made for children. The exhibition presents this recent production. The use of fiberglass allows the works to be serially reproduced—being, this, a hybrid between art and design. Twenty sculptures occupy the museum’s area at Faria Lima Avenue, the front yard, and a large portion of the garden, all available for children—with special needs or not—to use. Internal rooms unveil the creation and development process of the works through studies and models in reduced scale, made of Styrofoam, gypsum, or clay. A timeline synthesizes Sara’s path as visual artist, art educator, and designer (an activity she exercised between 1994 and 2011 together with her sister Anete Ring at Rosenberg Design). The exhibition “Esculturas Lúdicas – Sara Rosenberg” also presents Sara’s debut in creating urban furniture, with three different models of benches, also made of fiberglass. Humor, lightness, and a playful component permeate her path.  More information: www.mcb.org.br
