Brazilian Chairs

Museu da Casa Brasileira , São Paulo, December 1994 to February 1995

Curators: Adélia Borges and Guinter Parschalk

Indispensable piece in the Western furniture, the chair is the subject most explored by designers around the world – and is also considered the most difficult to deal with. Brazil is no exception and has a vast production of seats. The exhibition encompassed 141 copies, and organized them into five modules: the historic, modern, award-winning, contemporary, and the anonymous. Pieces were selected for their technical and aesthetic qualities, for their historical importance and the degree of contribution that each item brought to the design, of course, regardless of the curators’ taste. In their way they tell the story of Brazilian furniture’s evolution. They bear witness, especially to the enormous effort of dozens of designers in the design of furniture adapted to our culture, our climate, the anthropometric standards of the Brazilian, the availability of materials, new technologies, efforts that have as their ultimate goal to improve the quality of life. Exhibition design by Felippe Crescenti.
