Mauricio Azeredo: 25 Years of Design

Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand/ MASP, March-May 1999

Curator

The exhibition was a retrospective of Mauricio Azeredo’s activity, until then leader of Museu da Casa Brasileira Design Award. Azeredo was the first Brazilian designer to systematically employ dozens of kinds of wood in his furniture. A simple gesture, but with extensive implications, as he unfolded before to our eyes the unsuspected diversity of colors and textures of this raw material. He recovered and studied old carpentry methods, combining them with development of a new technology to create a synthesis between both. The exhibition enhanced the chromatic diversity of the woods, the construction details, such as sophisticated mortises and subtleties of the Brazilian material culture research, on which the designer bases his work. Exhibition design by Pedro Mendes da Rocha.
