The history of the Brazilian furniture has been told mostly from a national dimension. Little attention has been devoted to how each state has contributed to the segment and, as a consequence, how can contribute to its future. The exhibition “Capixaba Furniture: Past and Present” gives the public a panoramic view of furniture production in the Brazilian State of Espírito Santo. The chronological course begins with the module “The Legacy of the Immigrants”, with creations by Italian, Pomeranian and Polish immigrants who settled in the State from the second half of the 19th century. “Precious Woodwork” features specimens elaborated between the 1940s and 1970s by carpenters who excel for the accuracy of craft making. “Modern Masters” shows the outstanding performance in the Espírito Santo by the most eminent triad of Brazilian modern furniture – Joaquim Tenreiro, José Zanine Caldas and Sergio Rodrigues. “Contemporary Capixaba Design” brings the work of active designer in Espírito Santo nowadays. “National Reach”, pieces by architects and interior designers from around the country, who found in the state suppliers capable of producing the furniture they design. The last segment, “The Force of Industry”, is dedicated to furniture produced in large series in the furniture pole of Linhares, directed to classes C and D. By demonstrating how the origins of immigration resulted in a large capacity furniture industry, the exhibition intends to contribute to the diffusion of the project culture in the segment and to foment the activity in the State.
