Encounters Design + Crafts

Universidade Estadual do Rio de Janeiro, May-June 2008;
A Casa – Museu do objeto brasileiro, São Paulo, February-March 2008

Curator

The exhibition assembled a selection of two dozen projects representing the best of what has been done by the union of craftsmanship and design in Brazil. Unlike other countries where design has developed from the skills and traditions of craftsmanship (Italy, Japan, Scandinavian countries, for example), in Brazil and other Latin American countries these two activities have always lived in separate worlds, in opposing camps. Around the 1980’s, this opposition has given way to approximation. The pieces were chosen not only by aesthetical criteria but also by ethical, since they are items of a kind of respectful approach between designers and craftsmen that has led to a comprehensive improvement in their lives. On display, objects produced in workshops led by designers like Heloisa Crocco, Janete Costa, Lars Diederichsen, Renato Imbroisi and Ronaldo Fraga, and promoted by institutions such as ArteSol, Sebrae and the Centro Nacional de Folclore e Cultura Popular. Exhibition design by Emile Badram and Paula Dib.
