Vegetal Origins – Transforming Biodiversity

CRAB, Rio de Janeiro, March to December 2016

Curator

This exhibition curated by Adélia Borges and Jair de Souza presents a comprehensive overview on contemporary craft production in Brazil. The show marked the opening of the Sebrae Center for Brazilian Craft Reference (CRAB), located in 19th century buildings specially restored for this new use, in Rio de Janeiro downtown. In a country known for having the greatest biodiversity in the world, the curators decided to cast their eyes on the way in which vegetal raw materials are transformed. The exhibition presented 734 pieces made by living artisans using woods, straws, seeds, and other parts of over a hundred different vegetable species. The process of transformation of the raw materials was displayed in 144 photos. Exhibition design: Jair de Souza.
