Palácio da Calheta, Lisboa, 2018 March to July
The exhibition highlights cultural exchanges between Portugal and Brazil with regard to design. The two curators—Bárbara Coutinho from Portugal, the director at MUDE –Museu de Moda e Design (Fashion and Design Museum) in Lisbon, and Adélia Borges from Brazil — selected about 160 pieces, among objects, furniture, packaging, graphic design, and apparel that somehow reveal dialogue or confrontation between these two countries. Various times in history are covered since 1500, when the Portuguese first disembarked on the Brazilian coast, emphasizing the 20th and 21st Centuries. The curators also cast their eyes to material culture in a few African countries, as these flows and exchanges were not always bidirectional, often including Africa.
