Santos=Dumont Designer

Museu da Casa Brasileira, May-July 2006

Conception, exhibition design and curatorship by Guto Lacaz, coordination and texts by Adélia Borges

In 2003, upon talking over the management of the country’s only museum institution specialized in design, one of Adélia Borges first acts was to invite Guto Lacaz to design an exhibition directed towards Alberto Santos Dumont who, in the opinion of both, was a complete designer, a pioneer in this activity in Brazil. Scale models of balloons, of the airplane 14-bis and of the Demoiselle were shown together with clothes, furniture, a shower, a wristwatch and other objects designed with ingenuity and inventiveness. The knowledge of mechanics, technology and materials empowered Santos Dumont to materialize solutions for different needs in perfectly functional objects or mechanisms. A rare sense of elegance, in turn, allowed him to go beyond practicality to distinguish himself also in the refinement of forms.
